Vegetation management along roads and rails
Due to increasing intensity and quantity of extreme events, especially storms, vegetation management along roads and rail tracks should be adjusted. Vegetation management along roads and railways can reduce the risks of interruptions of transport infrastructure (roadsides/rail tracks). Possibilities are cutting down of trees that may fall during extreme storms and pose risks, choosing the proper vegetation for changing climatic conditions, planting of vegetation, protection forest to stabilize soil along roadsides/rail tracks and to prevent the risk from mudslides and erosion.

One specific part for vegetation management are protection forests. Such forests protect building areas, infrastructures and similar against avalanches, rock fall, landslides and – slips, soil erosion and flooding. There are two cost types estimated: yearly forest management (forster, maintenance, timber harvesting, hunt) and recultivation of damaged protection forest.

Protection forest was assessed in Bavaria, Germany. The analysis estimated different cost components: forest management/wood harvesting/hunting,  conservation and maintenance of intact protection forest, restoration of affected protection forest and technical avalange protection.
